Play mpg files on OSX

I have a problem. Every time I try to download a movie or music video from Limewire, it says I'm missing a key component.
The files available for download are pretty small and they download extremely quickly, which right away suggests something is wrong since movies are not supposed to download in less than a minute EVER. then once the file is downloaded, it will say "couldnt open the file 'such_and_such.mpg' because a software component needed by the movie could not be found." I´m thinking I probably need another software to play movies but I already have Quick Time 6.1 and I thought that would do...
Help!

Try downloading divx for mac or vlc for mac is another choice. I watch VCDs using vlc. Hope it helps.

Playing mpg

Goose,

I tried your recommendations on using other programmes, but it seems that everytime I dowload soemthing from Limewire that the mpg automatically opens Quicktime and I'm not familiar enough with the Mac (yet) to work out how to transfer the application over. Can you play mpgs with DivX?

transfer

If you want to transfer a document to another program you have to:

select the document
choose archive/info
open with... and choose the program you want to use

Where is this "archive/info" and "open with" dialog located? How does one get to that point?

I'm not sure where the archive/info settings are located either, but here's an alternate method:

From the Finder, select the file you want. Choose Get Info from the File menu. If the Open With: arrow is not already pointing downwards, click it. There should now be a popup menu with a list of applications that you can use to open that particular type of document.

The "get info" menu is under file>get info. Or you can press command-I. "Command" being the button with the apple on it. The files you are downloading may be MPEG 2 files which Quicktime doesn't read with out buying and installing the mpeg2 component. But vlc player should play anything you throw at it.
