Question Backup Software With Archive & Compression

I've been successfully using Time Machine to safeguard my data ever since I got my MacBook back in August/September 2009 and it's saved my bacon a few times already!

What I'm looking for now is some backup software that will backup all my files to a compressed archive file on another hard drive that I have - I've been searching on Google but can't seem to find anything that fits the bill so I hoping someone here can help?

I can find lots that will copy/synchronise files, but none that will actually backup all your files using compression so each time you do a backup it takes up a lot of space.

I know I could just zip a few folders up, but then in the future should I be looking for something, it's a pain having to open each archive to find what I might be looking for.

Hi! "each time you do a backup it takes up a lot of space." ??
I don't see what you find objectionable with SuperDuper? Once the initial backup is done it only takes a few minutes to update the clone and it's bootable to boot (no pun intended). My 750 gig drive has a little less than 300 gigs used and it only takes about 10 minutes to update it every night (automatically of course). Tom
