window sizing

When i open an application, the window is smaller than I need.
I enlarge it, but when I return to the application at a later time, the window is small again.
Is there a way to permanently 'hold' a window to a specific size?
Thanks

Regrettably I think that this is determined by the application programmers, some programs such as Firefox retain the window size set by the user between sessions others don't. So (I may stand corrected) you need to complain to the application's software author.

Indeed this is a setting when writing an application. Try pressing the (+) button (the green one) to switch the window to the larger format, resize that, and then close the app. I've had some apps remember that (larger) size.
