Unhappy Free music download

Hey everybody. I'm new to this forum and I recently switched from a PC to a Mac.
I also got myself a new iPod Touch and I was wondering whether there is a reliable and safe music download for macs which I can use to put songs onto my iPod. I've already spent hours scouring google. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Love Georgia.

Reliable and free unfortunately don't go well together. No luck with whatever methods you were using on Windows?

This site does not condone music piracy in any form

On my PC I was using this program called Ares Galaxy. It was all free and it worked great for me, but I have looked and so far I can't find a mac version of it.

Are you looking for a website to download or a program? iTunes (free) will load any song on your computer (format and DMR being ok) to the iPod.

All you need is to load the music on your computer

After checking out Ares Galaxy, I searched and found this page. Cannot validated any of the programs though.

iTunes can use and convert most music formats (ie - MP3 & audio CD-ROM) into the format used on Apple iPods. With the CDs, itunes usually asked if you want to add them to the library - and you can download the 'cover art' too (altho' it's not always accurate...)

If you're not keen on submitting yet another credit card online (I'm not) you can pick up an iTunes gift card and use that to start an account on the iTunes store.

If you're looking to record something online - like that YouTube video with that darned Japanese song you can't get out of you head - and you have no idea who did it, or WORSE it's not available ANYWHERE and you've tried EVERYTHING ... there's WireTap Pro. Does a descent job converting sounds on the Mac into a file that iTunes can use.

Some of my oldest CD's have deteriorated and I find myself searching for ways of getting replacements for that music without buying the CD over again. One way I've found that usually works well is to grab audio from youtube. It's a multistep process and is somewhat tedious but it's entirely safe which is obviously a very good thing.

Using Safari head to youtube and search for a music video of the song you're after. Once you find it, press [⌘ option A] or click on Window > Activity. This page is organized by web page with each tab in Safari corresponding to a bold item. Expand youtube if necessary within the activity viewer. Look for the line that includes this string in the url: "youtube.com/get_video". It is a very long url but will always have that string. It's also usually going to be the largest file in the list. Double click on this. By doing so, you will download the file you were previously streaming (the video itself). Rename this file by adding a ".flv" to the end of it.

Download the app iSquint. This lets you convert video formats pretty easily (and is freeware / donationware). Drag your .flv file to iSquint and let it do its thing. You'll end up with a playable copy of the movie.

You can easily stop there if you'd like. If you prefer to just keep the audio, there are pretty easy ways of stripping that out. I tend to use iMovie but I suspect there is a far easier method (I just haven't bothered to look). Once the movie is in iMovie, I just click share > export via Quicktime. I then choose save audio as AIFF.

***Edit:
I love this forum. Because of this thread I ended up searching for WireTap Pro to see if that would be an easier method than the youtube > isquint > imovie process I described above. Then I realized that WireTap Pro was one of the apps I got with my Macheist bundle. It seems the easier way of doing this was already installed on my computer and I had no idea. Thanks for the tip Solitare!

iSquint will convert a flash video file (.flv) to mpeg. At this point you have a format that works on a video iPod. If you prefer just audio, there are a number of ways. What I tend to do is use iMovie or Garageband to separate the audio track from the video.
