A stay of Execution for OS 9

From the web pages of MacAddict Mag...

Just when you thought all X (er, 10) nails had been driven into Mac OS 9's proverbial coffin, Apple today issued a statement filp-flopping on the company's prior decision to abandon OS 9 booting entirely. The new deal is, Education customers will be able to get eMacs, iBooks, and CRT iMacs with OS 9 as the default startup system through June 2003. If you want more muscle and OS 9 to boot, non-Education buyers have to step up to the dual-1.25GHz Power Mac, which will also be available in an OS 9-bootable configuration until June '03 (thanks Quark!)
"We are pleased to report that Education customers are rapidly adopting Mac OS X, and are now ordering over 50% of their Macs with Mac OS X as the default OS. Apple expects this percentage to climb to over 75% by the start of the next Education buying season this April. To accomodate the last 25% who still wish to buy their Macs with OS9 installed as the default OS, Apple will continue to offer our Education customers some configurations of the current eMac, iBook, and CRT iMac product lines that will boot into Mac OS 9 until June 2003."
"Apple's professional customers are rapidly adopting Mac OS X, with more than 80% now choosing Mac OS X as their default OS. This past September, Apple announced that starting in January 2003 all new Mac models will only boot into Mac OS X, while retaining the ability to run most Mac OS 9 applications using Mac OS X's “Classic” software. To accommodate a minority of our pro customers still running Mac OS 9 applications such as QuarkXPress, Apple will continue to offer a 1.25 GHz dual processor Power Mac that will boot into Mac OS 9 until June 30, 2003."

Just for those who didn't know...

I just bought a Dual 1GHz Power Mac, which luckily still has the ability to boot into 9. Classic doesn't cut it for everything. I've had problems installing some Classic applications in Classic, so I had to boot into 9. For everything else, there's OS X.
