OK the easiest way is to start with the Mac off, then hit the Power-On button and then immediately hold down the Alt key. Continue to hold down the Alt key until at least 10 seconds after you hear the start up chime.
This will take you into the selectable boot menu, wait until the cursor turns into an arrow, then insert the 10.4 Install disk.
Click on the left (curly) arrow to get the Mac to rescan for bootable devices, again wait for the cursor to turn into an arrow.
Click (to select) the Install disk icon and then click on the large arrow icon on the right. This will make the Mac boot from the disk and start the upgrade process.

Where did you get the version of 10.4.6? It needs to be either a retail version, or one specifically for your model Mac (G5 iMac, or tower, or ...). It sounds like you tried to install a version of 10.4.6 for a different model Mac.

This implies the hard drive can't be found. If all else fails, I would put the install DVD in boot to that. Once it starts, you can go to the Blue Apple and select Disk Utility, and from there you can see if your hard drive is visible and if so you can do a few minor repairs to see if that fixes it.
If not, you can do a reinstall of the OS and select the Save and Archive option so your data won't be deleted.
See if any of that works out.
Also, I think Intel versions of the OS won't work on the PPC chips. But it would have told you that before you installed anything.

Wait - if you format you will loose all your data. I'm assuming that matters to you, yes?
Are you able to see the drive in Disk Utility? Can you repair it from there and see if it boots?
And wasn't it Option to hit when you are booting to select which drive you wanted to boot to?

Yes, if you can see the drive, I would do a fresh install and reformat the entire thing - as long as your data is safe.
Good luck!!

If you are trying to install OS 10.4.? on a G5, using a disk that came with a MacBook (Pro) it won't work (ever!).
When Apple ship OS-disks with a new Mac they only provide the drivers relevant to that Mac. So you are trying to install an Intel machine code package on a G5 PowerMac. Hence the big screw up.
When Apple sells an OS (we call it a retail version), it has all the drivers for all applicable Mac that can run that OS.

Yeah, I asked about that earlier.
But it shouldn't even boot to the install DVD then, right?

To be clear you cannot use the MacBook Pro disk on the G5. You need to get a retail version of Tiger to install on your computer. Your only other option is to find someone with a OS disk for the G5 and install that.
If you do anything else, you are creating more problems.

Don't buy a copy of 10.4 right now. Wait for 10.5 to ship and then buy a retail version of that. Has anyone heard yet whether there will be a family license for 10.5 such that you can upgrade N computers for some price less than N x $129?
