moving files from old HD to new HD

I have a blu/whi G3 400 running 10.1.5 & 9.2... my question is that I have MANY issues with my 10.1.5 freezing and what I'd like to do is get a new hard drive and install 10.2 on it, THEN transfer all the files I want to keep from the old hard drive to the new one and then wipe the old drive and do a clean install.
I'd back these files up on my LaCie FW/USB CDRW but I also believe that my firewire ports on my mac are bad because the burner won't recognize it while connected by FW, but recognizes the USB connection. The only problem is that transfering via USB is SLOOOOOOOOOOOW and my computer inevitably freezes during the process.
Is this a viable possibility?

I'm pretty sure you can install two hard drives into a Blue and White G3 (Yosemite). All you have to do is connect the second drive and change the jumpers (I can find instructions online if needed). After you boot up, both drives will appear on the Desktop and you can drag files between them.
