Recovering microsoft word files

Hi, my girlfriend just boght a Mac last week, she had a test version of Microsft office. She then purchased the full version, however when it installed it deleted all of the word files she had been working on. Does anyone know how to recover the word files? The program is still in the waste basket.

The uninstall of an app should not have deleted all of her files. Did she store them in the <user name>/documents folder? Is anything else missing from the <user name>/ directory?
