Angry OSX/Classic Conflict?

I'm using a new G4 Flat Screen (In Hawaii we call it a "manapua mac" because the base looks like a big manapua, a local food).

Ever since I got it a couple of months ago I have had multiple problems involving slowness of launching, refusal to launch, slowness to shut down, refusal to shut down, unexpected quits, unexpected quit of the Classic OS, ... I began keeping a record of the problems to see if I could deduce a pattern. I now have six pages of comments, but still don't see any way to predict a failure, except that it seems that if I use some Classic programs, then switch to OS X, the OS X programs are sometimes (but not always) impossibly slow. Examples:

After using Word 5.1 (much better for my needs than later versions), then switching to OS X for a Netscape session, then back in Classic, I tried to open a Word document by dragging the document icon over the Word icon. It usually works, but sometimes I get the Spinner-Without-End. I even waited once to see if it would eventually load, but after 5 minutes, gave it up and pushed the button. (Force Quit didn't work.)

Trying to find a file using Sherlock, sometimes works, but sometimes produces the SWE. (SWE has become a common entry in my log.)

It has got to the place where I periodically shut down and restart, just to avoid the problems.

Yes, I did call Mac Made Easy, who sold me the machine, but of course they want me to re-install the system--a procedure that in the past has caused me so many hassles that I am reluctant to try it--or get the answers from the various program sources, who, in turn, want me to do research on the machine that I don't feel competent to do.

I used to be a confirmed Macophile, but this is eroding my love for the machine. Has anyone else had these problems?
