Java40.jar message in Communicator

I'm running MacOS 8.6 and Netscape Communicator 4.7. Upon starting up Communicator I get this long message about needing to load "Java40.jar".
I'm not experiencing any major crashes or hangups but would really like to get rid of this message. I would appreciate any help in fixing this problem.

Thanks!
Daryl

Has this message always appeared when starting Communicator? If so, then I would suggest re-installing it.

If it has only appeared recently, make sure your "home" page isn't giving an error.

Thanks for the reply!

This has been more of a recent thing. Should I just change my homepage?
If that doesn't work should I then reload Commmunicator?

Here is the message:

'Unable to start a java applet: Can't find 'java40.jar' in your CLASSPATH._ Read the release notes and install 'java40.jar' properly before restarting.'

Thanks again!

That's what I would do. Sometimes poorly written pages can give errors. The error does appear when the page loads, right (not while the Communicator splash screen is on)?

Right, as soon as the home page loads it pops up. I never thought of that being the problem though.

I really appreciate your help and I'll change that homepage right away!

Thanks!
Daryl

Well, Chris. I tried changing the homepage this weekend and it didn't work. But, I was mistaken earlier, the message DOES come up when the Communicator splash comes up, NOT when my homepage opens.

So, should I reload Communicator? Or just ignore the message when it comes up since I seem to be having no ill effects from it (that I can tell).

Thanks!
Daryl

Well, if it doesn't bother you, then don't re-install it. I'm pretty sure a re-install would fix the problem.

How to fix this?

I am told that you should reinstall the Java Virtual Machine from your OS 9 CD to eradicate that message.

The reason I am getting it is that I installed Netscape 7 and the user did not like it so I removed it and that messed up something despite the fact that java40.jar is indeed where it belongs.

Not a web error

By the way, the error has nothing to do with homepages or URLS, but appears when/as the Netscape application opens...it's an alert from the application itself...going onto the web does not produce it.
