Question Upgrade?

Hi, I need to upgrade! I have an iMac with OS 8.6, with 9.5 GB hard drive, PowerPC G3 processor, SDRAM 64 MB. I want to get the new OS X, but I want to make sure that my existing software is compatible. I have Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0, Better Telnet 1.2.2, Internet Explorer 5, Office 98, and Umax Vistascan DA 3.7.3. How do I know if I upgrade that these systems will still work?
Also, apparently since I only have 8.6 I can't download the newer upgrades. I can't even find a place where I can get 9.0, so that I could then download the upgrades from there.

Thanks, Pam

First, you'll need 128 MB of RAM to run OS X.

About the software:
  • PhotoDeluxe will not work in X, but Photoshop Elements 2 will.
  • Better Telnet will not work, but you can use the ssh and telnet commands in the Terminal.
  • Internet Explorer 5 works in OS X.
  • Office 98 will not work, you need to upgrade to Office v.X. ($300)
I'm not sure about the scanner. What scanner do you have?

Upgrade?

I did find somebody selling OS 9 for around $99, can't remember where at the moment.

But, if you purchase OS X Jaguar there is an offer for a full version of OS 9.2 for $19.95.

You'd definitely need at least 128m RAM, 256 if you can afford it.

What I'm planning to do is partition my hard drive and install X on one and 9.2 on the other. Otherwise you end up with 2 system folders on your drive and when you launch an older program X will go into Classic mode which may be slow.

I'll use a dual boot system and run my older programs under 9.2 and gradually upgrade to pure X software as I go along.
