Having trouble turning iTune files into mp3s

I have a new iMac G5. Compared to my old blue G3, this thing is amazing but a little daunting for this computer-challenged dolt.

Someone tried to explain how to convert a song in my iTunes from AIIF file to mp3. Here's what I did:

1. Went to iTunes preferences, clicked open
2. Went to "importing Using" from drop-down and chose "mp3 Encoder"
3. While still at "Importing Using: Setting" changed to "192 kpbs"
4. Then I went back to iTunes and selected "song"
5. Click "Advanced" from iTunes and select "convert selection" to mp3

But the newly made file IS NOT AN MP3, it says "MPEG4"

My question is HOW THE **** can you convert a file into a TRUE MP3?

What am I doing wrong? This is driving me nuts.

What does it say under "Format?" MPEG-1, Layer 3 is an MP3 file.

Alex,

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm not sure what you mean exactly when you wrote "What does it say under "format"?

Where can I find this "format" info?

Maybe if I re-phrase my question, my problem will be clearer.

I want to convert an AIIF file (a song on my iTunes) into an mp3 file NOT an m4a or MPEG4(which it says on the songs file after I've converted using the "Advanced" iTunes menu (or whatever you call those things at the top of the montitor screen) where I find the "Convert selection to mp3"

Why does it only convert the selection to an m4a/MPEG4?

I WANT AN MP3 NOT AN m4a/MPEG, DIMMIT!

Control-click on the converted song, and choose "Get Info." What does it say for Kind and Format?

Alex,

Thanks a lot for your help. I tried one more time doing (as far as I can tell) the exact same thing I did the first time, but the converted file is now an honest-to-God mp3 not an mpeg4.

So, it looks like my "issue" is no more. Thanks, again.
