Mac Hard drive Image

Hi

Here comes my first Mac question

I use a software called Drive Image http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/ to created a Image of my C:/ hard drive on my PC and then when something goes wrong I could easily restore that image and my system will be as sharp as the day I created the image.

Do you guys know if there is something similar for the Mac?

Thanks

Alex

Yes, there is one. It's called 'Disk Copy.' If you're using OS 9, it's in your Utilities folder, and if you're using OS X, it's in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. (Let us know if you need help using it )

Another option is backup software like Retrospect.

Thanks Chris I just called Retrospect nadf they put me on ho0ld for a pre sell person for more than 30 minutes and I had to hang up and give up my phone number to see if they can call me back.

But just in case they don't this retrospect work similar to Drive Image http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/ ?

What drive image does it boot the system from a floppy or CD and it basically make a image as a single file of your the HD where you have everything install on your system (OS, Applications. Drivers ect) and you storage that image in a diferent HD, so when something goes worng you boot form the floppy or CD again and it wipe up your entire OS and application Hard Drive and put that single file image back to your main HD in around only 10 minutes and everything is back as it was

This Retrospect make a single file image of your system and then wipe up your entire system when is need it and put the stuff back? or It just copy the more important folders like OS, Applications, Utilities ect, back it up as folders separate folders and then put those back?

thanks

Alex

I think Disk Copy is more like Drive Image, and you don't have to buy it because it comes with every Mac .

You can either run Disk Copy from the CD that came with your computer, or your hard drive. It does exactly what Drive Image does, it makes a file with an "image" of your hard drive. You can put the file wherever you want.

Retrospect is a bit more advanced. It automatically makes daily, weekly, or monthly backups of your whole drive, or just a certain folder. You can back up to whatever media you want (assuming it your data will fit), and I'm pretty sure it also lets you save it as a file on your hard drive.

I would burn a CD with a copy of Retrospect (or Disk Copy, depending on what you use) and a system folder, so you can boot from it when you need to restore your data.
