Reading PDF in Safari problem

For some reason I cannot read PDF documents on a website in Safari. Using Mac OS X 10.7.4. I downloaded the Adobe Reader program, then went to a website that offered our retirement statement. On my Mac the website simply ignores the request when we pick the year of the statement from their drop-down menu. On my brother's MacBook it pops right up. Ditto on a PC using IE.

Took some advice from the Apple Support Community and removed Adobe plug-ins from the library, but that didn't do it. I'm baffled.
