Locked into Time Machine

Hi cyberspace,
I bought a back up external hard drive in order to back up from another external hard drive that became corrupted.
Unfortunately I accidentally set up Time Machine on this new external one and no matter what I do I cannot reset the external drive for the purpose it was bought for.
