Animated GIFs

Can anyone point me toward a good free application for creating animated GIFs?

Unfortunately, there are few free Mac image editors. One free editor commonly included with Linux distributions is The GIMP (strange name, I know.)

Several groups have ported the GIMP to Mac OS X, and a free version is available from Sourceforge. You need to also install X11 for Mac OS X (available on the Mac OS X disc under "Optional Installs").

See this tutorial to get started with animations in the GIMP.

While I've never used it to create animated gif images, on a hunch I figured I'd launch NeoOffice's drawing app and check help for animated gif. Sure enough, it handles ani-gif's just fine.

You may want to check it out. NeoOffice takes a bit of time to launch but runs very smoothly after the initial launch completes. Hint > launch the app, close the default window (a text doc), right click on the app in the dock and select new drawing.

Just Google NeoOffice. It is a free replacement for most components of MS Office and, as it turns out, also does GIF's.

It's a full featured complete replacement for MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Powerpoint plus it contains a pretty nice drawing app. I have it so I can easily open MS Office files on my real computer =^)
That said, I normally prefer the nicer interface of Apple's Pages app and the Cadillac of graphics apps Photoshop. The only thing I regularly use NeoOffice for is the spreadsheet app -- which overall does a very good job of immitating Excel, better in some areas and lacking in others.

But yes, if all you need is an app to help with animated gifs this would be overkill (but free).
