Mac Mail will not launch

I recently updated to Lion. Everything has been working just fine until today. I was typing an email and it suddenly became very sluggish. The "wonder wheel" would start spinning after I typed two or three words. So I closed mac mail and tried to reopen it. This is the error message I got:

"There is a problem with your mailboxes." "Try clicking Quit and then opening Mail again. If this message reappears, click Quit and Rebuild index. The next time you open Mail, it will import your messages."

So I then I tried restarting a couple of time and that did not work. Then I did a file system check. Didn't work either. All other apps appear to be working fine. However, I did notice that when the mail app is trying to open, the other apps slow way down too. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Join the crowd. I have the same problem. Ever since I switched over to Lion I've had this problem. I installed Thunderbird and set it up to receive messages from my me.com account. Everything works fine under Thunderbird. You can download it from mozilla.com. I have contacted Apple about the problem and I get the old brush-off. Hopefully, they will remedy the problem soon.

Sorry you are having the same trouble. Thanks for the Thunderbird tip. I just installed it and its running fine. However, I do want to solve the mac mail issue asap. If I find something I will let you know.

Glad to help. I eally hope they find a solution to the Mac Mail problem. I'm not the oy one that has experienced difficulty with it. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I hope Thunderbird works for you as well as it has for me.

i have the same problem.



if i click "quit and rebuild index", the computer freezes. ive let it run all night and it is still thinking in the morning. if i try to restart by holding down the power btn, it takes about 3 hours to boot up. when it does, we are back to the same dialog box.

it would be great if apple would fix this.
