Saving data from dead mini

My Mac Mini 1.66ghz (intel) died this weekend, diagnosed as a logic board failure. I'd like to pull data off the hard drive- pictures, Word files, etc. And put them on my old G4 tower- which still works fine. I removed the drive, put it into a USB caddy, but when I connect it to the G4, I get a message that the volume cannot be read by OSX. I'm also not able to mount it through tje disk utility.

I noticed that the file systems used on this drive and the G4 drive are not the same. Am I going to jave to find another intel powered Mac to be able to pull data off of this drive?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Off the top of my head, did you try powering up the G4, then attaching the USB chassis and see if it would treat it as a removable disk?

I've tried plugging the USB in while the G4 was running and I've tried booting it with the USB attached. Got the same result both ways.

If there is an Apple store around you they may allow you to copy the files (to a usb stick). Or if you have access to a windows machine you can try HFSExplorer it is not a good as a paid format convert (MacDrive) but it may do the trick.
