Resetting Region Code Counter on i-Mac G5 Super Drive

Hi all.

I am very new to this group. Had my Mac about 2 years and love it! My only problem is the issue of multi region burning. I buy a lot of DVD's from US (region 1) and I live in Australia (region 4). I always back up my DVD's, but of course the mac only allows 5 regions code changes which really blow! Is there a way around this? I am not into pirating, I just want to be able to do this for myself. VLC won't work on my machine for some reason. I have already had that suggested to me. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I stand corrected but IIRC if you use the 5 region changes the drive is fixed to the last change, i.e. you have to unlock it before using up all the changes. I also regret to say that the easiest way I've found to unlock the drives is to remove them and temporarily fit them in a PC to unlock them.

I had a similar issue when I lived in London, but burned DVD for the US. There is a firmware patch that I found for my old Quicksilver G4. Since upgraging to the G5 have not checked but I assume there is one available. The patch will remove the limit altogether. I am not a home so cannot look up the paper work, but when I do I will check and advise. If you want to do some digging I believe the site was dvdresources.com or something like that.

Be sure to read the disclaimers, and how to install if you find the patch. If you do it wrong you could screwup your machine.
