Unhappy Finder not running, flashing finder menu bar.

I have a G5 with os x 10.2.8

My wife control-clicked an image in an email to save to disk.

Multiple finders were launching.

After restarting, no icons appeared on the desktop, the finder menu bar
was flashing on and off every 2 seconds, we could not click on the finder menu bar, the mouse works ok, all items in the dock work ok except the finder item.

When we control click on the finder item in the dock, the message "Finder not running" shows up.

Help, we have searched for 2 days and don't know what to do,

ran fsck, no problems
ran Disk Utility from the Installation CD, ran repair permissions and repair disk, no problems

Help Help

Tom

Do you have multiple accounts on the machine? If you create a new account, does the same problem occur, or does it only affect your account?

Also look through the logs using "Console" in /Applications/Utilities. (specifically ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Finder.crash.log). Anything unusual?

finder not running flashing finder menu bar

Hi Alex,

I have multiple user accounts. Only one is affected by this problem.
I created a new user account. No problems with this one.

I logged in as myself rather than the damaged account,
opened a terminal window, logged in as the damaged user in terminal,
and deleted the com.apple.finder.plist file from her /users/username/library/preferences folder.

Now the finder menu bar flashes much more quickly and a finder window showing the hard drive and network icons shows every 10 or 15 seconds but just for 1/2 second or so, not long enough to click on it.

When checking the crash logs while logged in as myself or "test" user, nothing to report. I will log in as "problem" user and check and report back.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Tomsun

Well, the system install doesn't appear to be corrupted since it only affects the one account. If deleting the Finder's preferences doesn't help, it must be another one of the user's preference files that are corrupted, though I wasn't aware that the Finder used any additional plist files.

Is it possible to just create a new account and move all of the user's files over (Documents, Music, Movies, etc)? Sorry that I can't be of more help.

Wink Still Plugging Away

Hi Alex,

Thanks for letting me know that the main system is ok!

I have the day off today and will pour through some unix admin manuals as well as try to replace the user's preferences 1 at a time till I get somewhere.

Tom.
