Internet sluggishness. Why?

Hi - baffled by recent slowness when I'm online, both in email, browsing, and downloading. Pages often don't even finish loading, and downloading anything is futile. I'm using OSX 10.3, and the problem is occuring with both safari and IE browsers. I checked with Earthlink, but everything seems ok regarding my set-up. Also, we use a PC on the same dial-up phone line, same earthlink account, and its speed is fine.

Any thoughts out there as to any possible causes or solutions?

What version of OS X 10.3 are you using? I haven't had any trouble with my browsers until I downloaded 10.3.2. After that dowload, everything went crazy.

Just 10.3. I installed it two days ago (up from 10.2.8), but the internet problem was already in evidence.

Seldom cause of such problems can be a virus. But, as you know, get mac virus-is something extraordinary. I've never had it. And don't know anyone, who had.
On PC i always have one virus- microsoft windows

Have you tried emptying the caches of the browsers and thinning out the cookies etc.
